The Child Who Started Playing Saxophone at Age 9

Godwin Louis has a multicultural background rooted in Haitian heritage, which has influenced his musical style and vision. He was born in Harlem, New York, and grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and Port au Prince, Haiti. For this reason, he was exposed to various musical genres and cultures, from jazz and gospel to classical and Afro-Caribbean rhythms.

What is most astonishing is that he started playing saxophone at age 9, and since then, he has never stopped pursuing his passion and excellence in music. So, he attended the Berklee College of Music and the Thelonious Monk Institute for Jazz Performance, where he had the opportunity to study and perform with some of the legends of jazz, such as Herbie Hancock, Clark Terry, Roger Dickerson, Ron Carter, and Al Foster.

The Global Jazz Artist and Composer

Godwin Louis has performed around the globe in countries including Mali, Senegal, Togo, France, and Finland, among many others. At the same time, he has also performed as a sideman and guest soloist with many other renowned musicians as well as conducting clinics and master classes worldwide.

As a composer, he has received the Jerome Foundation Emerging Artist Grant and the Jazz Gallery’s New Works Commission and has created original works that showcase his diverse musical palette, seamlessly blending jazz, gospel, classical, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and global sounds. His compositions serve as a testament to his creative depth, exploring the intersections of tradition and innovation.

The Educator, Humanitarian and Ambassador

Godwin Louis is not only a musician, but also an educator, humanitarian and ambassador. He is a professor at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where he teaches courses such as Ensemble Master Class, Woodwinds and World Culture, and Woodwinds Private Instruction. He is also a mentor and inspiration for many young musicians who aspire to follow in his footsteps.

As a humanitarian and ambassador, Godwin Louis has traveled from Benin to China to help promote cross-cultural understanding and introduce thousands to America’s indigenous art form, jazz, through public concerts, master classes, and jam sessions. He is also the founder of Experience Ayiti, a nonprofit educational, multidisciplinary arts organization that aims to celebrate and preserve the rich culture and history of Haiti and to empower and uplift the Haitian people through education, arts, and social entrepreneurship.
